FIDR has partnered with Sesa Sterlite to empower underprivileged youths through skill development training in selected market driven courses such as basic computers, functional English, retail, basic management and soft skills. Further, the project would help increase employment opportunities for these underprivileged youth in the growing service and retail sector by enhancing their educational and interpersonal skills.
Objective of the proposed support is as follows:
- To equip the youth with employability skills in computers and retail in order to make them financially self-dependent.
- To promote confidence and presentation skills by incorporating aspects of English speaking and Personality Development.
- To promote employment by identification and placement of these students in the respective corporates/ organizations.
- To provide volunteering opportunities to the employees of Akzo Nobel
The target group under this project is the underprivileged youth (18-28 years) from the locations who are either class 10th or class 12th passed and graduates.
In the proposed centre, youths are to undergo a training of 3 months with a batch of 45-60 students in each term. Further, each term is divided into 3 batches (morning, afternoon & evening) for 6 days in a week. The candidates will be drawn through mobilization activities in the community especially in the educational institutions. Door to door surveys, road shows etc will be done to publicise the course. The interested candidates will have to go through an entrance test and interview, post which their admission process will be completed. The selection of a suitable community partner would help us conduct these activities. Though there are different ways of mobilizing the candidates, the actual strategy will be finalized only after identifying the community.
Indicators for Success
The following indicators will determine the success and achievements of the programme:
- Number of youths trained
- Number of youths helped with placement support
FIDR plans to coordinate the placements by acting directly or indirectly as a link between trainees and employers. Further, observable changes could be gauged by interacting with the trainees- assessing their confidence level and general awareness, attitude/behaviour towards the opposite sex, body language, general appearance and hygienic practices.
Community mobilization is perhaps the first step where we would come in direct contact with the target group, the youth and their community. It is important to understand that the motivation and participation of the youth alone wouldn’t be sufficient for the success of the skill mission. For the youth has to be motivated by the involvement of the entire community to ensure continued commitment to the skill program.
The participation of the community would help the youth and the people develop a conviction in the skill programs and the associated economic and social development. It would also enable the community to work towards a common vision, which would enable their youth to be gainfully employed and provide them with the means of sustenance.
Thus the community mobilization initiative would aim to understand the needs, apprehensions, expectations, challenges, etc of the local community. It would aim to instill confidence in the local people towards and goals and objectives of the skill programs and would aim to build a collaborative and co-operative environment for executing the skill program.
